Thursday Night Titans: Where did this come from?

February 15, 2008

EDIT: Okay, so I mention my girlfriend like 12 times in this piece. Knowing what I know now, I deeply regret this. I promise I’ll try not to do it again.

And yes, I’m single again… ladies?

Yeah, it’s been a while. But I’ve been basically forced at nag-point by my woman to write something tonight. So here I am. A long overdue Tuesday Tursday Night Titans.

In sports: You may have noticed the absence of NFL playoff predictions, as well as my obligatory pre-Super Bowl shittalking post, wherein I predict defeat for the team I personally don’t like, only to see them win anyway and make me look like a fool. Well, I was lazy this year. The short story is this; if you had asked me to bet on the Super Bowl, I would’ve picked the Giants +13. I thought the Pats would win, but I thought it would be close. But within hours before gametime, I began to think about it. There was no way this game wouldn’t be a blowout. Tom Brady in warm weather, Belichick with two weeks’ preparation and a huge chip on his shoulder, Eli Manning at the other team’s controls. It wouldn’t be close.

Of course, I was dead fucking wrong. DEAD wrong. And while it’s easily one of the top three upsets in sports history and arguably the biggest choke of all time (depending on what you define as a choke… although I’m still partial to the ‘04 ALCS, biased as I am), it didn’t end up bothering me nearly as much as it should have. Part of me worried; perhaps because I saw the game at my layday’s house and spent the night in her loving available arms, and that I had become whipped to the point that I didn’t care about a sporting contest, particularly an epic loss involving my team. But a larger part of me didn’t seem to mind.

In case you weren’t aware, my city has won two of the last four World Series, three Super Bowls in four years, and a legitimate chance to win the NBA title this year, next year, and likely the year after that. Cleveland, Minnesota, Buffalo or Philly would kill to say that. And yes, it was a terrible, terrible loss that will forever tarnish the Pats dynasty. But you know what? Three weeks later, I’m doing fine. Maybe that makes me less of a sports fan. Ah well.

What are ya watchin?: Just watched Action Jackson last week. That movie rules. It eludes me as to why Carl Weathers didn’t become a bigger star. Also last week, I was in New York for Kaiju Big Battel’s New York Blackout. Without going into too much detail, this show ruled. I was given a script in advance, so I had a good idea of what the show would be, top to bottom, and I wasn’t expecting anything special. Not bad, by any stretch, but nothing special. And I don’t know if it was because the crowd was hotter than any wrestling crowd I’ve ever seen or what, but it fucking ruled. I don’t know if it was the highlight of the night, but Chris Hero’s appearance was something to remember. Chris Hero is an indy wrestler whom I’m not entirely familiar with; I’ve seen a few of his matches, but that’s about it. But he kinda reminds me of WCW-era Chris Jericho. And his appearance was just plain awesome. The crowd HATED him. Man, that was cool.

What are ya playin?: My woman got me Smackdown vs Raw for the Wii. It’s… interesting. I think with two players, it could be really fun. The controls are much less exact than the PS2 versions of the past, but they’re manageable. There’s a few problems with the little things, though. The character models aren’t very good. The announcers, never SvR’s strong point in the past, are somehow even worse. And there aren’t a lot of options available. But I’m nitpicking a little. Overall, it’s pretty neato.

See you again in another three months.
